Teddy Roosevelt

“Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children's children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.”

― Theodore Roosevelt

Teddy Roosevelt is a hero for the work he did to preserve our public lands. During his presidency, he protected over 230 MILLION acres of public land. He created the United States Forest Service, established 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves (today's national wildlife refuges managed by the USFWS), 4 national game preserves, 5 national parks, and 18 national monuments.

A famous 3-day campout with John Muir in the Yosemite Valley ended with Roosevelt protecting additional lands in what is now the Yosemite Valley.

He became president at age 42 and is still the youngest president we have ever had!

"We have become great because of the lavish use of our resources. But the time has come to inquire seriously what will happen when our forests are gone, when the coal, the iron, the oil, and the gas are exhausted, when the soils have still further impoverished and washed into the streams, polluting the rivers, denuding the fields and obstructing navigation." ~TR
